LETTER TO GAZA
Dear Resident of Gaza,
I am an Israeli woman deeply ashamed of the horrors that were visited upon you and your community by Israeli soldiers- our soldiers.
How did we raise boys in this country to become monsters that can kill children? Monsters that can force a father to watch his son bleed to death? Monsters that can shoot at people escaping with a white flag for protection?
But it has happened.
I was born in Europe during the Holocaust.
I always wondered: what were decent Germans doing while we Jews were being killed.
During this war I thought about this every day: what could I do? How could I help?
I went to demonstrations, I signed petitions- but really, there was nothing I could do but cry at the horror.
Cry at the sight of every lifeless little body. Cry at the heartlessness of my people.
I can not ask you to forgive us- that is too much to ask, but please know that there are many of us sick with the horror of what has happened to you and our inability to help.
In sorrow,
Dr. Veronika Cohen
